    A buyer's checks

NHTSA lists 1 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. Owners filed 187 complaints with NHTSA, most often about air bags, engine and unknown or other; have those parts checked. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. Under the hood

Power comes from the 2.0L 4-cylinder, driving through a 10-speed automatic. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

The EPA rates it at 6.6 L/100 km combined, so a 300 km weekend uses about 20 litres. A weekend of 300 km comes to about $30.69 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Who rents the Corolla

It suits a work trip where a reliable car matters more than anything else. It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one.

    The Corolla in everyday use

Being a compact car, it is easy to park and comfortable on longer drives. EPA lists 510 litres of luggage space, enough for a family's bags for a long weekend.

    A longer test drive

Drive the Corolla on your commute before you commit to it. Try the Corolla on your commute, then decide. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one.

Picking a year and a trim

If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first. Compare the SE with the other trims of the same year before you decide. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.

    Running costs

Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.
