The 2021 Toyota Corolla XSE for buyers

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2021 Toyota Corolla XSE for sale by us right now. Before you buy the 2021 Toyota Corolla XSE, here is what the figures say and what to look at.

Before you sign for the Corolla

A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. A pre-purchase inspection at a shop you choose is money well spent. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. Owners filed 187 complaints with NHTSA, most often about air bags, engine and unknown or other; have those parts checked.

    What the figures tell you

It uses the 2.0L 4-cylinder and front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

By the EPA's combined rating of 7.0 L/100 km, 300 km takes about 21 litres. The fuel for 100 km comes to about $10.85 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,950 a year for 15,000 miles.

    A good match for

It suits people curious about the model who want to drive it before they buy. It suits anyone who needs a car for a few days, a week or a month without buying one.

    Room inside

As a compact car, it is easy to drive and park in the city. The trunk holds 368 litres by the EPA's count: about two large suitcases and a few soft bags.

Drive it on your own roads

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide. Drive the Corolla on your commute before you commit to it.

    Narrowing it down

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it.

    Money matters

The EPA estimates US$1,950 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.85 in fuel. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $108.50 at our price setting.
