Specs, explained

Its powertrain is the 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

For 300 km of mixed driving, expect about 20 litres, from its 6.6 L/100 km rating. A weekend of 300 km comes to about $30.69 at our price setting. At US fuel prices, the EPA estimates US$1,850 a year for 15,000 miles.

Best uses

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits commuters, couples and business trips.

Space and size

Its car body is low and settled, with a separate trunk. In plain terms, its 510 litres of luggage space hold a family's bags for a long weekend.

Try before you buy

Renting first costs a fraction of the price of buying the wrong car. Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience. Rent the Corolla for a week and see how it fits your life.

Which one to look for

If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.

What it costs to run

The EPA estimates US$1,850 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $102.30 at our price setting. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.
