Specs, explained

It is powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Expect about 20 litres for every 300 km, going by its 6.6 L/100 km combined rating. A 300 km weekend costs about $30.69 in energy at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,850 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

Good uses for the Corolla

It suits visitors who want a familiar car for a week in town. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

Space, size and seats

As a mid-size car, it is easy to drive and park in the city. In plain terms, its 510 litres of luggage space hold a family's bags for a long weekend.

Try before you buy

If it is in our fleet, rent it; if not, a similar car gives you a feel for the class. Nothing is charged until we confirm the rental and you approve the offer. Rent the Corolla for a week and see how it fits your life.

Picking a year and a trim

Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices.

Money matters

The EPA estimates US$1,850 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $102.30 at our price setting.
