The 2020 Honda Civic EX: before you buy

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2020 Honda Civic EX for sale by us right now. For anyone shopping for the 2020 Honda Civic EX, here are the facts that matter.

    A buyer's checks

NHTSA lists 5 recall campaigns for this model; ask the seller for proof each one was fixed. A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. Owners filed 236 complaints with NHTSA, most often about electrical system, unknown or other and power train; have those parts checked.

    Engine and fuel

Power comes from the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, driving through an automatic (CVT). It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

It is rated 6.9 L/100 km combined: about 21 litres every 300 km. Expect about $10.70 per 100 km at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,960 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    Space, size and seats

Being a compact car, it is easy to park and comfortable on longer drives. The EPA lists 736 litres for luggage, roughly bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

Is it right for your trip?

It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next. It suits a work trip where a reliable car matters more than anything else.

    Try before you buy

Rent the Civic for a week and see how it fits your life. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. A test week in the Civic tells you more than any review.

    Money matters

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models.

    Which one to look for

Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. A newer year is not always better; check what changed before paying more for it.

    A note on Yameri

Yameri is about 3,364 km from Toronto, outside our delivery area. If you are starting from Toronto, rent the car here and drive it to Yameri.
