Thinking of buying the 2020 Toyota Corolla SE?

We rent cars and sell one only now and then. There is no 2020 Toyota Corolla SE for sale by us right now. Here is what to know about the 2020 Toyota Corolla SE before buying one.

    A buyer's checks

A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. NHTSA has 314 owner complaints on file, mostly about engine, unknown or other and power train. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Ask the seller for the service records of this exact car.

    What the specs mean

The 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

Combined fuel use is 6.8 L/100 km: about 20 litres for 300 km. For 1,000 km, budget about $105.40 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,925 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    When the Corolla makes sense

It suits commuters, couples and business trips. It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car.

    How big it is

A car body like this keeps the weight low, so it feels settled on the highway. The EPA measures its luggage space at 510 litres, roughly a family's bags for a long weekend.

    Try before you buy

If the Corolla is in our fleet, its page shows the rates; if not, a similar car helps you judge. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one. Rent it, live with it for a week, and decide with real experience.

    Choosing the right one

Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.

    The cost of driving it

At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.54 in fuel. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $105.40 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,925 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices.
