The 2021 Toyota Corolla L for buyers

Before you sign for the Corolla

A private seller in Ontario must give you a Used Vehicle Information Package. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered.

    What the specs mean

It is powered by the 2.0L 4-cylinder, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Rated at 6.6 L/100 km combined, it needs around 20 litres for a 300 km round trip. At our price setting, it costs about $10.23 to drive 100 km. The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Space, size and seats

As a compact car, it has a closed trunk that keeps luggage out of sight. At 510 litres, the trunk fits a family's bags for a long weekend.

    A good match for

It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

    Try before you buy

Drive the Corolla on your commute before you commit to it. Rent the Corolla for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one. A test week in the Corolla tells you more than any review.

    Running costs

The EPA estimates US$1,900 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.23 in fuel. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $102.30 at our price setting.

    Choosing the right one

Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary. If two trims share a powertrain, the difference is equipment, which you can check in person.
