Buying the 2020 Honda Civic EX

We are a rental company, not a dealer, so there is no 2020 Honda Civic EX for sale by us right now. Before buying the 2020 Honda Civic EX, read what the figures say and how to try one first.

What to check on the Civic

NHTSA has 236 owner complaints on file, mostly about electrical system, unknown or other and power train. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered. Ask for the service records and check open recalls by the VIN.

    The figures, translated

The powertrain to know here is the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, with front-wheel drive. The turbo gives a small engine the pull of a bigger one when you need it. With front-wheel drive, the weight of the engine sits over the driven wheels, which helps in winter.

Its combined rating is 6.9 L/100 km, which means roughly 21 litres for 300 km. Expect about $10.70 per 100 km at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    Good uses for the Civic

It suits a family trip where everyone and everything fits in one car. It suits a stretch of weeks between selling one car and buying the next.

    Practical details

As a compact car, it has a closed trunk that keeps luggage out of sight. The EPA lists 736 litres for luggage, roughly bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

    Try before you buy

A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Rent the Civic for a week, or up to 365 days, before you commit to buying one. Load it with your things and park it where you park; then decide.

    Choosing the right one

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Set a budget that includes tax, licensing, insurance and the first set of tires.

    The cost of driving it

The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary. Tires, brakes and batteries are the regular costs to budget for beyond fuel.

    Farmbrook and the Civic

If you are starting from Toronto, rent the car here and drive it to Farmbrook. We have no location in Farmbrook; CarmaCars rents from Toronto, about 509 km away.
