    Recalls and complaints

Owners filed 236 complaints with NHTSA, most often about electrical system, unknown or other and power train; have those parts checked. Have a mechanic inspect a used one before you buy it. Look at the tires, brakes and battery; they are costly to replace. In Ontario, a used car needs a Safety Standards Certificate to be registered.

    What the specs mean

It is powered by the 1.5L 4-cylinder turbo, with front-wheel drive. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

For 300 km of mixed driving, expect about 21 litres, from its 6.9 L/100 km rating. Driving 300 km costs roughly $32.10 at our price setting. EPA puts its fuel cost at US$1,960 a year for 15,000 miles at US prices.

    A good match for

    Practical details

As a compact car, it is easy to drive and park in the city. Its 736 litre trunk is enough for bulky luggage, a stroller or sports gear.

Rent it for a week first

A test week in the Civic tells you more than any review. A week of your own driving tells you more than a test drive: the commute, the parking, the fuel. Try the Civic on your commute, then decide.

    Choosing the right one

Look at a few listings of the same year and trim to get a feel for fair prices. Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Ask the seller which trim it is; badges can be swapped and options vary.

    The cost of driving it

The EPA estimates US$1,960 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. At our price setting, 100 km costs about $10.70 in fuel. A 1,000 km month costs roughly $107 at our price setting.
