    The figures, translated

The 2.0L 4-cylinder with front-wheel drive is the powertrain to look at. It runs on regular gas. Front-wheel drive is the usual layout for cars this size, predictable in the rain and the snow.

Plan on about 29 litres per 300 km; the combined rating is 9.5 L/100 km. In money, 1,000 km costs about $147.30 at our price setting. The EPA estimates US$2,700 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles.

    What the Tucson is like

Being a compact SUV, it handles luggage, strollers and sports gear well.

    Good uses for the Tucson

Families, skiers and anyone with bulky luggage. It suits a weekend away when the train does not reach where you are going.

Rent it for a week first

Rent first, buy later: a week with the Tucson answers the big questions. Rent the Tucson first, and buy only if it fits your life. Drive the Tucson on your commute before you commit to it.

    Running costs

Get an insurance quote for this exact model before you buy; rates differ a lot between models. The EPA estimates US$2,700 a year in fuel for 15,000 miles at US prices. Ask what a set of tires costs for this trim; sizes and prices vary.

    Choosing the right one

Decide what matters most first: fuel use, space, or the price you can pay. Write down the VIN of any car you consider; it unlocks the recall and service history. If you are unsure between two options, rent one of them for a week first.
